Work in progress…

Photo on 02-01-2014 at 13.16 #3

I am a mermaid floating in a turquoise pool… At last I begin to play with colour. Yes the the apartment is cluttered with art stuff everywhere. And no, I don’t care! Although I might just straighten up so we can at least eat at the kitchen table… I think she is emerging slowly, a little like me, kind of shy in a foreign land… If she turns out OK I think I will make prints of her and maybe even open up the etsy shop again. I want to make the colours more vibrant and contrasty and maybe add…

Art journals, writing and soul searching…

Photo on 29-12-2013 at 17.27 #2

It’s getting to that time of year when many of us are naturally drawn to evaluating our experiences of the last twelve months… THE time when we like to review our accomplishments and look back on getting through some tough times too. I have had a lot of big life changes this year and looking back and writing really helps me catch my breath. I recently stumbled on some wonderful writing prompts from Tess Marshall; The Bold Life (see below) and have begun collecting some inspirations and quotes to see me into the New Year. I love working in my journals…

Sat by the sea again today… inspiring me to draw mermaids…

Photo on 29-11-2013 at 17.25

When I was in Athens I treated myself to some expensive art paper. I need good quality paper especially if I intend to work with mixed media. I love the Strathmore mixed media paper with a velum finish. It has a really subtle texture to draw onto. So I continue to draw girls, sometimes with an ethereal ‘other worldly’ quality, – or at least that is what I am intending. Not always successful! And as I am spending so much time at the beach at the moment I am completely inspired by the whole feeling I get from being by…

Italy to Athens – a bit sooner than we planned…

IMG_0294

Leaving Italy early due to our accommodation not working out was the best thing that could have happened. We feel at home in Greece and have done ever since we crossed the sea. It has been a much easier and a simplified experience compared to Italy. And we are not wanting to be negative about Italy at all. It is a beautiful place with beautiful people and we are so grateful to everyone we met and the welcome we received. It was just that we didn’t feel quite right there. We can’t, even now put our fingers on why… it…

running away from stuff that was really hard to run away from…

Even though I didn’t want the stuff and situations I had… it was actually really hard to let go of some of it… It has been about 2 months now since we left our house and have been travelling, with no-fixed-abode and we have accomplished so much and come so far and still have so much to learn all at the same time. The above photo by the way is me trying to get my feet warm whilst sleeping in our van in Paris! And let me just say –  hair dryers can be an absolute life-saver! Some transitions are…

simplyfying and moving on…

Written on the 19th August, moving has put me a little behind… Packing up the fairy studio tonight, and I am wondering… Am I giving up everything (i.e. am I crazy?) Or, am I the luckiest girl in the world? There could well be a thin line between following your bliss and plain old craziness! Out of all the rooms in the house, this is the space I have been procrastinating the most. A fierce resistance to having to go through my special creative things, lovingly pack them and let go of that final layer of STUFF! I have been…

The ‘no plan’ plan! …

Written last night… Have you ever gone on your travels and not known where you were going, how long you will be away for, not have a home to return to, and not even know when you are actually leaving? For some this would be their idea of a nightmare… and for others; a calling of a free experience. We are all made differently and that is part of our beauty! Ah…. (big sigh) so hand on heart, connecting to what brings my heart joy, I can say I am so happy to be about to embark on this unknown…

Alice in Wonderland… Down the Rabbit Hole and into Wonderland!

So here it is! The day of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! It’s a day where A Fanciful Twist has an amazingly, imaginative, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and celebrates with lots of other creative spirits who want to have a party too! Go over and have a look at the eclectic menagerie (and beautiful photography) and I will see you there! When I started this project about Alice and the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party I really didn’t know where it was going to go. I knew I wanted to focus painting mainly the characters but wasn’t sure at all where…
